Australia Day in UK

Now officially being ex-pats we did the Aussie thing and went to the local Aussie bar, Walkabout, to celebrate Australia Day. (Imagine Dakota on a bad night), 400 drunken Aussies all wearing footy shorts, thongs and flags. A can of VB cost £4.50

Later that night we went to our local, The Eagle (http://www.geronimo-inns.co.uk/theeagle/), with all the housemates for the Aussie menu (rissoles, chicken parma, kangaroo steak) followed by an Aussie themed quiz. Questions included naming famous faces (including Alf from Home and Away) and naming Aussie songs (Jason Donovan, Kylie, Men at Work). We came 3rd!

Moving Day!

After looking at a lot of dodgy places we finally found one. 2 Davisville Road, Hammersmith, London W12 9SJ, UK.

Newly renovated 3 storey house, sharing a big kitchen, longue/TV room, washing machine, 2 bathrooms, separate toilet and outdoor patio.

We are moving in this afternoon to the loft room, then moving downstairs when one of the guys leave in a few weeks (he is moving out into a private flat with his girlfriend). There is also the option of moving into a larger room on the ground floor with more storage space etc when that couple leave in about a month.

It is in the middle of several tube stations (Central, Circle, District and Hammersmith & City lines...or red, pink, yellow & green on the map). It's half an hour’s walk from Westfield (the biggest one in Europe), close to 2 cinemas, lots of pubs & 2 other shopping centres with supermarkets etc. Shepherd’s Bush Market is within walking distance which sells fruit&vege and meat also.

These photos are just from the ad we found on Gumtree.com…will post more after we have moved in.

Still House Hunting

We have booked the next 2 nights (Tuesday & Wednesday) in London, staying in a B&B in Kensington (£66 for two nights including breakfast for the both of us on lastminute.com). We have an appointment with a letting agent and also a couple of private property viewings. More than likely we will be sharing as not many places allow you to rent unless you are employed or can supply a guarantor. However, the lady at the letting agency said there are ways around it if we only want a short lease etc. Hopefully something will be sorted by the end of this week!

House Hunting

We have been looking for our own place somewhere closer to London on a tube line so we can get out and do things and apply for work. The place in Acton which looked too good to be true WAS…it was a scam wanting me to transfer money to Chris via Western Union then send the owner a copy of the receipt as proof of us being able to afford rent. Turns out they wanted a copy of the receipt so they could intercept the transfer and pocket the money. A good lesson to be learnt whilst house hunting. Our next plan is to call letting agents and get them to do the ground work for us, set up viewings etc.

Allison & Craig Oxford

The weekend just gone we stayed with Craig, Allison, James, Chris and Sox (there beagle puppy) in Ware (about 9miles from Norma’s). Went to a local shopping centre where I got my wonderful Wellie’s, watched Craig, James and another James ski on a man-made slope and walked to a local stables to see Chris’s horse Fudge. Some of the horses had weird names like Crackers and Josh! Who names a horse Josh?
We later went to a Chinese buffet…it was delicious. Not 100% sold on the drinks though when the lady made a gin and tonic with more gin than tonic.

Barclays Bank Account

After being told I couldn’t get a bank account using an Australian Passport without having a UK utility bill in my own name I thought it would be a long wait until I got my own and Chris and I would have had to share an account. On the 4th visit to Barclays (whilst Chris was opening his account) someone finally checked what documentation I needed being Australian and all it was, was a passport.
My card is now in the mail which features contactless payment which works similarly to an Oyster Card where you touch your card on the EFTPos machine, not having to swipe or insert it.

T Mobile

Chris and I both have T Mobile sim cards in the UK. Chris: 07951 326 546 Alex: 07949 291 798
The numbers are ridiculously difficult to memorise.

Travel Ideas

Although the recent snow has resulted in the cancellation of our planned trip to France and day trip to Cambridge, there are heaps of cheap travel deals especially in the newspapers. P&O offers a 2 for 1 deal for a 2 day cruise to your choice of Amsterdam, Rotterdam or Bruges. The cost is £72 which includes an en suite cabin, coach transfers to your chosen city and duty free onboard shopping. P&O also offer a ferry from Dover to Calais in France. Costing as little as £1 for a foot passenger or £17 for a car it’s an economical way so see parts of Europe we may have not otherwise chosen…and a free bottle of JP Chenet wine onboard doesn’t hurt either.

Shoes

After the two pairs of boots I brought from home broke (my Pocahontas boots tore away from the sole and my leather boots have a tiny hole in the toe which lets the water and snow in) the hunt was on for new shoes. Londoner’s footwear seems to be a choice of Uggs (the Aussie ones which they are willing to pay £200+ for) or Wellie's. Needless to say they look like people at home going to the Croydon market in their best going out moccasins. Regular boots here are either cheap and nasty or ridiculously overpriced. That being said shoes are sold everywhere from the local supermarket to every chain and department store and also online (my best bet for future shoe purchases).
I eventually had to purchase Wellie’s. A sales assistant looked quite stunned when Chris asked where we could buy ‘gum boots’ from. Ended up in an outdoors/camping shop and I ended up with these stunners….
Not bad considering my feet are dry and I can fit 2 pairs of explorers underneath.

Snow Day

6/01/2010…SNOW DAY!!! It was amazing to see everything so white. Needless to say the novelty has worn off now two weeks later.

UK Supermarkets

I never thought the day would come where I enjoy going to the supermarket. Everything is a novelty in the likes of Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s. For starters they sell everything, from your regular supermarket goods like meat, fruit, veggies, bread and general groceries to electronics, clothing, shoes, bedding, pharmaceuticals, mobile phone shop, cafe and liquor (within the regular supermarket isles). The variety of liquor puts Dan Murphy’s to shame. Half a supermarket isle is for cider alone. Bulmer’s comes in pint sized cans in both apple and pear varieties. Beer mainly comes in 4 packs (including Corona’s) or slabs (but the bottles are considerably smaller in slabs). The only Australian beer sold is Foster’s!The Australian wine they sell is laughable. Wolfblass and Lindeman’s just about covers it. For a product that isn’t great and was sold for about $6 at Dan’s, it’s pretty hard to justify paying over $15 for. Oyster Bay is around $15 which is similar to home. Spirits tend to be cheaper if not the same price as home. Absolut vodka is about $30 and scotch is a little cheaper. RTD’s include Smirnoff mixed with Ocean Spray cranberry juice in Red Bull sized cans and Schweppes gin and tonic (a far cry from cruisers and UDL’s) They sell a lot of Cadbury products including deserts, cakes and biscuits along with regular choccies. They already have their Easter products in. Magazines come in ‘travel size’ (about 2/3 the size of a regular magazine). Most importantly I found Vegemite…wouldn’t have survived without it.

Borough Market

On our walkabouts we came across Borough Market. It was up a dimly lit alley way….kind of reminded me of Oliver. It was similar to the Vic Market Night Market selling food (we had an excellent Malaysian Curry), bevies (mulled wine and warm apple cider) along with produce including fruit and veggie, seafood and deli products.

Happy New Year

New Years Eve afternoon we headed down to the London Eye. At about 4pm people were staking out their seats along the river for the fireworks at midnight…quite impressive in the single digit temperature. We went to a nearby pub for dinner. Our pubs leave a lot to be desired compared to UK pubs which are warm and cozy and do amazing food. We ended up heading back to the hotel as there wasn’t a lot to do around the London Eye while we waited for the fireworks. Many of the pubs were shutting at 6pm as the roads are blocked from cars along with some of the station exits to help control the flow of people closer to midnight. When we headed back in at about 10:30pm the trains were packed and it was a case of getting in and hoping for the best. We got off at the Embankment and masses of people filed out (similar to protests on the news).
It was well organised with volunteer police directing people and signage everywhere marking the route to the fireworks viewing areas. The fireworks were amazing (the photos don’t really do them justice). Just after midnight it began to snow!

London

Arrived at Heathrow at 5:25am on 30th December. I passed customs without a worry so don’t expect to see me on border patrol anytime soon. We then caught the tube out to Victoria Station and dragged all our luggage in the rain to Jubilee Hotel. As check in wasn’t allowed until the afternoon we dropped off our bags and wandered around. We walked to Buckingham Palace, but didn’t get to meet the Queen (one of my UK must do’s, along with going to Antiques Roadshow). We visited London Bridge and walked past the London Dungeons (looks similar to Dracula’s Theatre Restaurant). We purchased Oyster Cards which you just swipe in and out of the stations instead of buying tickets…you also get a cheaper fare by doing so. Although I was never a fan of Melbourne public transport…the tube is excellent. Trains come about every 5 mins and no matter where you are there is a station within walking distance. Once we got into our rooms we had to battle 3 staircases with our luggage. The room was small (as most places are in London) and the shower…you may as well have showered over the toilet. Breakfast was tea and coffee, yogurt, toast and cereal. We hopped on the tube and went to Oxford Street. Top Shop was 4 levels of shopping….quite overwhelming. Clothing is fairly inexpensive at the likes of Top Shop, H&M and Miss Selfridges. It was quite amusing to see identical things that Sportsgirl sells over here.
Along Oxford Street there was a Christmas Market (a fenced off block filled with mulch). It was mainly food for sale but Chris had ‘the best sausage’ he had ever had.

Malaysia

Departed Melbourne at 3:40pm, 28th December and stopper over in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Arrived at 8:40pm and caught an airport taxi to Hotel Capitol. The following day it was about 30°. Our flight to London wasn’t until 11:55pm so filled in the day by wandering the many shopping centers. I was refused service at a money exchange service because I was female (you can imagine how outraged I was). When you go at Easter time June bug, I suggest you exchange your money at the post office before going or organise Travelex or an EFTPos card so you can withdraw the local currency yourself.
Chris had a shisha (another anti female activity) before having dinner at a little restaurant on the sidewalk. Meals were about $1 each. They did excellent rice and noodles and also banana roti.
